A heating chemical tank at a Garden Grove aerospace facility has prompted a state of emergency in Orange County, California, forcing the evacuation of more than 50,000 residents as emergency crews scramble to prevent a catastrophic explosion.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared the emergency on Saturday to mobilize state resources. “The safety of Orange County residents is the top priority,” Newsom said. “We are mobilizing every state resource available to support local responders.”
The crisis centers around an industrial tank at GKN Aerospace containing roughly 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate—a highly flammable plastic epoxy that releases its own heat as it reacts. Emergency responders initially believed the tank was cooling down, but a high-risk entry into the danger zone Friday night revealed that temperatures inside the tank were actually climbing at a rate of about one degree per hour, reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
“We did put people in harm’s way last night … with an attempt to go in and neutralize the additional tank,” Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) Incident Commander Craig Covey said on Saturday. Covey previously stated the situation presented two raw outcomes: the tank fails and spills, or it goes into a thermal runaway and explodes. “Letting this thing just fail and blow up is unacceptable to us,” Covey said on Saturday, adding that regional experts have joined the effort to find a solution.

GKN Aerospace issued an apology to local residents and businesses, stating they are “working tirelessly with all relevant experts to resolve this situation as safely as possible.”
While the chemical is a severe respiratory irritant, continuous air testing by the EPA and local air quality districts shows completely normal levels outside the facility, with zero gas leaks detected so far. Evacuation orders currently encompass a one-mile radius spanning portions of Garden Grove, Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster.
The incident has forced the closure of dozens of local school campuses and altered events at the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival. However, nearby destinations including Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Angel Stadium remain open and unaffected.
Meanwhile, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer has launched a formal investigation into the cause of the tank’s failure, opening a tip line and urging corporate whistleblowers to come forward immediately. “Given the very real risk to human life as a result of this event, it is crucial that anyone who has information… come forward and report it,” Spitzer said.
