Two South Florida men were issued mandatory court citations on Tuesday afternoon after a Monroe County Marine Deputy caught them in possession of five undersized mangrove snappers under the Tavernier Creek Bridge in Islamorada.
According to officials, Islamorada Marine Deputy Nelson Sanchez was patrolling beneath the Tavernier Creek Bridge at Mile Marker 90 at approximately 1:40 p.m. on June 23, 2026.
While watching several people fishing from the location, Deputy Sanchez observed one individual place a small fish directly into a bucket without measuring it to ensure it met legal requirements.
A subsequent inspection of the gear revealed a total of 18 mangrove snapper. Upon measuring the fish, the deputy discovered that five of them were under the legal size limit.
The two anglers involved were identified as Chavel Dwayne Levy, 42, of Miami, Florida, and Adrian Devon Frith, 37, of Homestead, Florida. Both men were issued mandatory notice-to-appear citations for the fisheries violations.
