A Florida man faces driving under the influence charges after he allegedly crashed his pickup truck into a roadside ditch, fled the scene, and then returned riding a tractor to tow his own vehicle away.
Deputies with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash in Callahan, Florida, on June 24. Upon arrival, a witness told deputies that the driver of a white pickup truck—which was lodged at an angle in a grassy ditch—had already left the scene on foot toward a nearby residence.
According to body camera footage released by law enforcement, a witness told officers at the scene, “He’s like, I’m going to hook a tractor to it and pull it out, and then I’m going to take the tractor home and come back and get the truck.”
The driver returned to the crash site riding a tractor shortly after deputies arrived. Law enforcement personnel observed the unidentified man stumbling as he stepped off the tractor, leading deputies to administer a field sobriety test.
The man failed the sobriety test and was taken into police custody. A subsequent search of the stranded pickup truck revealed a 15-pack of cold beer along with several open containers.
Following the arrest, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office issued a public statement regarding the incident:”We probably shouldn’t have to say this, but DUI laws apply to ALL motor vehicles…yes, including tractors. If you’ve been drinking, hand over the keys. All of them.”
