TAMPA, Fla. – Commuters heading through Tampa this week should prepare for some extra brake lights as the Tampa Water Department begins a series of maintenance projects and repairs starting Monday morning.
Drivers will encounter lane closures in three separate areas of the city, with all work expected to wrap up by late Friday afternoon, April 17, provided the weather stays clear.
Starting at 9 a.m. today, crews moved onto East 21st Avenue to perform system maintenance. This project has shut down the westbound lane between North 31st Street and North 26th Street. This specific closure will be in effect daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until the end of the week.
To the west, North West Shore Boulevard is also seeing disruptions. Since 8:30 a.m., the northbound lane between West Spruce Street and the Airport Service Road has been restricted.
While that project also aims for a Friday completion—specifically by 4:30 p.m.—the department noted that crews might need to return at a future date to finish up additional tasks.

Meanwhile, a more urgent repair is taking place on North Highland Avenue. The Water Department is working to fix a water main break between West 7th Avenue and West Oak Avenue. Similar to the 21st Avenue site, this northbound lane will remain closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily throughout the week.
City officials have placed barricades, signs, and flaggers at all three locations to help guide drivers through the modified traffic patterns.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution when passing through these work zones, as project modifications could happen on the fly depending on what crews find underground.
In a statement regarding the various projects, the city noted that “the staff and crews of the Tampa Water Department appreciate everyone’s patience during this time” as they work to keep the city’s distribution system running smoothly.
