A routine traffic stop in Callahan led to the arrest of a man and a woman on drug and child neglect charges after authorities reported finding methamphetamine within reach of a young passenger.
Detectives with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle on U.S. 1 on Thursday, July 16, after noticing its license plate belonged to a different car. Upon further investigation, officers found that the vehicle was neither registered nor insured.
While searching the car, detectives located a small jar with a white crystal-like substance in the backseat, placed where a child could easily reach it. Tests later confirmed the substance was methamphetamine.
Authorities arrested Theresa Jean Pfister, 43, and Robert Ryan Martin, 47, both residents of Callahan. Each faces charges of possession of a controlled substance and child neglect. Martin faces additional charges for driving without a license and attaching an unassigned license plate to a vehicle.
Both suspects were booked into the Nassau County Jail & Detention Center. Martin’s bond was set at more than $87,000, while Pfister’s bond exceeds $60,000.
Deputies notified the Florida Department of Children and Families regarding the incident, and the child was placed in the care of a family member.
