ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle accident that occurred early Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of a local pharmacy. According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the incident took place shortly after 12:00 p.m. at the CVS located at 3501 54th Avenue South.
Witnesses and preliminary reports indicate that a woman behind the wheel of a sedan was traveling through the parking lot when the car suddenly accelerated. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the sudden increase in speed.
The vehicle jumped a curb or left the pavement, eventually striking a large tree situated near the side of the retail building.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene quickly and transported the driver to Orlando Bayfront Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she was pronounced dead later that afternoon. Officials have stated that her identity is being withheld pending the notification of her family members.
Fortunately, no other vehicles were struck during the incident, and no pedestrians or bystanders in the busy shopping area reported any injuries.
