Tragedy In The Florida Keys: North Carolina Man Dies After Diving Into Shallow Water

A weekend in the Florida Keys turned tragic on Saturday afternoon when an Asheboro, North Carolina, man lost his life in a water-related accident. Edward Eugene Stills, 50, was swimming at Marvin Key off the Lower Keys when the incident occurred around 3:17 p.m.

According to initial reports from authorities, Stills had dove into shallow water before he was discovered unresponsive. Members of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded to the scene and brought him back to shore.

From there, he was rushed to the Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island. Despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officials have stated that foul play does not appear to be a factor in the death.

While the preliminary evidence points toward an accidental injury related to the depth of the water, a final cause of death has not yet been determined. Autopsy results are currently pending as investigators work to close the case.
