NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. – A fatal incident involving climbing equipment prompted a temporary closure of Sims Park on Friday, according to the New Port Richey Police Department.
Emergency personnel responded to the park earlier in the day following reports of a person suffering critical injuries while descending from a tree. Upon arrival, first responders determined the individual had died at the scene.

Investigators say preliminary evidence suggests the death was the result of a rappelling accident. Authorities are currently working to reconstruct the events leading up to the fall but have stated that no foul play is suspected at this time. Police described the event as an isolated and accidental occurrence.
The identity of the deceased has not been released as officials work to notify next of kin.
Sims Park remains temporarily closed to the public while law enforcement conducts a thorough investigation of the scene. Police have not yet indicated when the park is expected to reopen.
