A suspect drove a truck packed with explosives into the entrance of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday afternoon, breaching the building before being stopped by on-site security. The attack occurred just weeks after the FBI Detroit Field Office held specialized active-shooter and threat-preparedness training for the synagogue’s clergy and staff.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the bureau had previously visited the facility to conduct Active Shooter Attack Prevention and Preparedness (ASAPP) training. The program focused on “Run, Hide, Fight” principles and making high-pressure decisions during a live breach.
“Just months ago, our team at FBI Detroit Field Office conducted active-shooter preparedness training with the clergy and staff at Temple Israel,” Patel told Fox News Digital, noting the focus on real-world decision-making.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard reported that the attacker was successfully halted by the synagogue’s security team once he entered the building.

No children or staff members were injured by the suspect. However, one security head was hospitalized after being struck by the vehicle during the initial breach, and 30 law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation following the incident.
According to Bouchard, the prior training was a decisive factor in the outcome. “What happens when they show up, that’s where training and preparation kicks in,” Bouchard said. He praised the security staff for stopping the threat before anyone inside could be harmed.
The FBI’s January training session had utilized scenario-based exercises designed to help staff practice responses to the exact type of intrusion that occurred on Thursday.
