Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center are monitoring an area of low pressure in the eastern tropical Atlantic that could develop into a tropical depression before the end of the week.
The disturbance, designated as AL96, is tied to a tropical wave located a few hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. As of Wednesday morning, associated showers and thunderstorms remain disorganized, but forecasters noted that “environmental conditions are somewhat favorable for development over the next couple of days.”
According to the 8:00 a.m. EDT tropical weather outlook, a tropical depression could take shape over the next day or two as the system pushes westward to west-northwestward across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic Ocean.
The window for strengthening appears limited. Forecasters reported that “environmental conditions are forecast to become less favorable by this weekend, potentially ending its chances for development.”
The National Hurricane Center has placed the odds of tropical cyclone formation at 60 percent over both the next 48 hours and the next seven days, categorizing the chance as medium. No coastal watches or warnings are currently in effect.
