The National Hurricane Center in Miami announced Sunday morning that an area of low pressure located over the northeastern Gulf of America is becoming better defined. Associated shower and thunderstorm activity is gradually increasing with the system, which is designated as AL91.
Forecasters state that continued gradual development is expected, and a tropical depression is likely to form later today or on Monday. The system is currently moving slowly northward or northwestward.
“Interests along the northern Gulf coast from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana should monitor the progress of this system,” the National Hurricane Center noted in its 8:00 AM EDT advisory. The agency added that tropical storm watches or warnings could be required for portions of the area later today.
Regardless of development, the system is expected to bring heavy rains to portions of the northern Gulf coast during the next several days.
An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the low-pressure area later today. The National Hurricane Center currently places the formation chance through both 48 hours and 7 days at a high 80 percent.
