Tropical Storm Melissa is forecast to undergo a rapid, explosive strengthening in the warm Caribbean waters, posing a severe and life-threatening danger to the islands of Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti this weekend and into early next week.

The intensifying storm is projected to become a major hurricane, potentially reaching a catastrophic Category 5 status, but current models indicate Florida will be spared a direct impact.

As of Friday morning, the slow-moving Melissa is organizing in the central Caribbean, shedding the wind shear that previously inhibited its growth. Forecasters warn that the abundance of warm water in its path is “jet fuel” for the system, making rapid intensification into one of the season’s strongest hurricanes a very real threat.

The AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale for Hurricanes rates the threat level as a 5 for the western Caribbean, reflecting the potential for catastrophic impacts to lives, property, and the economy, far surpassing the Saffir-Simpson Scale’s focus on wind speed alone.

Catastrophic Impacts Expected

Experts project the storm’s slow movement will result in days of torrential rain, with some areas of Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti potentially seeing a staggering 12-18 inches of rainfall. This will lead to catastrophic and life-threatening flooding, devastating mudslides, and the washing away of roads and bridges.

Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva stressed the need for preparation, warning of significant risk of storm surge and wind gusts that could reach the intensity of a Category 4 or 5 hurricane, capable of toppling trees and causing widespread power outages. These extreme conditions are expected even if the storm’s core remains just offshore.

Florida’s Direct Threat “Low”

While the storm’s eventual track beyond Cuba carries some uncertainty, AccuWeather forecasts currently maintain that the odds of “direct” rain and wind impacts from Melissa reaching the East Coast, including Florida, are low. The storm is expected to track north toward Cuba early next week, and subsequently toward the Bahamas and possibly Bermuda, keeping the U.S. mainland largely out of the bullseye.

However, experts continue to monitor the long-range forecast, as Melissa’s remnants could eventually contribute to significant indirect impacts along the East Coast as it interacts with a separate non-tropical storm system in the Atlantic. For now, residents across Florida can breathe a sigh of relief as the immediate, catastrophic threat bears down on the Caribbean islands to the south.
