The National Hurricane Center is tracking several tropical waves moving across the Atlantic basin, with the most active systems expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas to Central America and the Caribbean through early next week.
In Central America, two back-to-back tropical waves are interacting with local moisture patterns to produce widespread downpours.
The first wave, currently moving over Panama and the western Caribbean, is bringing heavy rain to Costa Rica, Panama’s Darién region, and Chocó, Colombia, through Sunday.
A second wave will reach the western Caribbean on Sunday, pulling in additional moisture and keeping heavy rain in the forecast for Panama and Colombia into Monday.
Across the eastern Caribbean, a strong tropical wave is bringing gusty winds, rough seas, and pockets of heavy rain to the Lesser Antilles. While forecasters state tropical development is highly unlikely, the system will continue tracking west toward the Greater Antilles, the central Caribbean, and the Windward Passage through Monday before weakening.
Farther east, two additional tropical waves are moving west across the open Atlantic at 15 to 20 knots, each producing scattered showers and thunderstorms between the African coast and the Lesser Antilles.
Outside the tropical waves, a tight pressure difference between high pressure in the Atlantic and lower pressure over Colombia has prompted a gale warning off the Colombian coast, where winds are expected to drive ocean waves up to 15 feet through Sunday morning.
In contrast, conditions in the Gulf remain relatively calm under a high-pressure system, with lighter winds and waves between 1 and 4 feet despite scattered thunderstorms.
