In a fiery address to the United Nations on Tuesday, President Donald Trump said he ended seven wars and saved millions of lives during his second term, all without any help from the international body. He told the assembled world leaders that his only two tangible takeaways from the UN were a malfunctioning escalator and a broken teleprompter.

“This is. These are the two things I got from the United Nations, a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” Trump declared, as he recounted a story of the First Lady nearly falling on the escalator and a frustrating moment when his speech teleprompter failed to work on Tuesday.

Trump began his speech by asserting that “no president or prime minister, and for that matter, no other country has ever done anything close” to what he had accomplished in “just seven months.” He stated that he had “ended seven wars, dealt with the leaders of each and every one of these countries,” and “never even received a phone call from the United Nations offering to help.”

The president went on to question the purpose of the UN, saying that the organization “has such tremendous potential,” but “it’s not even coming close to living up to that potential.” He derided the UN’s typical response to global crises as “a really strongly worded letter” that is “never follow[ed]…up,” calling it “empty words.”

“Empty words don’t solve war. The only thing that solves war and wars is action,” he said.

Trump also mentioned the achievements in ending wars and negotiating the Abraham Accords. He said that while he has “received no credit, never receives credit,” the “real prize will be the sons and daughters who live to grow up with the mothers and fathers, because millions of people are no longer being killed in glorious wars.”

In addition, Trump spoke about his experience as a real estate developer, recalling a time when he offered to renovate the UN complex for $500 million.

He said the UN decided to “go in another direction,” which was “much more expensive” and resulted in a “far inferior product.” Trump asserted that the UN “spent between two and four billion dollars on the building” and that the project was so corrupt that he was asked to testify before Congress on the “tremendous waste of money.”

Trump extended “the hand of American leadership and friendship to any nation in this assembly that is willing to join us” in forging a safer, more prosperous, and “much happier” world. He emphasized that “we must reject the failed approaches of the past” and work together to confront threats, including the proliferation of “powerful and destructive weapons.”
