The White House is considering a tour for President Trump to visit major U.S. cities grappling with high crime rates, according to a top administration official. On Thursday, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller hinted on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” that the president would consider a tour, stating that Trump is committed to making American cities “great” and “safe.”

The potential tour follows the president’s recent deployment of the National Guard to Washington, D.C., a move he announced on August 11 to combat a wave of violent crime. The action was taken under Section 40 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. Miller lauded the D.C. deployment as a success, claiming it has already led to 1,007 arrests and the confiscation of 111 illegal firearms.

Crime Statistics and Political Pushback

The administration’s focus on urban crime has met with significant pushback from Democratic leaders. Officials in cities like Washington, D.C., Chicago, and New York City have cited local data to argue that crime rates are already declining.

Washington, D.C.: Despite a reported 35% drop in crime in 2024, critics point out that these statistics may be misleading as they reportedly exclude felonies and aggravated assaults. An investigation was also opened into a D.C. police commander for allegedly altering crime data.

Chicago: Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson have urged the president not to send troops, highlighting a 25% drop in homicides compared to 2023.

New York City: While some reports show an overall decline in crime, an investigation by the New York Post revealed that years of underreported sexual assault cases have skewed the city’s statistics.

The Role of Immigration

In his interview, Miller also linked urban crime to immigration, claiming that California is refusing to turn over 30,000 “criminal illegal aliens” to ICE, who he says will be released back onto the streets.

The idea of a presidential tour comes as public opinion appears to support the administration’s tough-on-crime stance. A recent Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found that 54% of registered voters believe President Trump’s crime-fighting efforts in D.C. are “justified and necessary.” This statistic provides a backdrop for a potential tour, which would likely frame the administration as the solution to urban violence.
