Escalating Trade War: New Delhi to Face Economic Hit Over “Obnoxious” Barriers and Moscow Ties
President Donald Trump announced today that the United States will impose a 25 percent tariff on goods from India, effective August 1st, citing India’s “far too high” tariffs and “strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers.”
The President also stated that India would face an additional penalty for its continued purchases of military equipment and energy from Russia, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump emphasized that while India is considered a friend, the trade relationship has been hampered by New Delhi’s protectionist policies. He further criticized India for being a major buyer of Russian military equipment and energy, alongside China, at a time when international pressure is mounting on Russia to cease its actions in Ukraine.
“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country. Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!” Trump wrote.
The announcement comes after months of discussions between the two countries, with top administration officials, including President Trump, having previously hinted at a pending trade deal. However, despite several rounds of negotiations, no agreement has been finalized.
When asked by reporters on Tuesday if a deal with India was complete, Trump simply replied, “No, it’s not.”

President Trump has recently expressed growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin and has shortened the timeline for a ceasefire in Ukraine, warning of additional sanctions and tariffs on nations that continue to do business with Russia. He has indicated a potential 100 percent “secondary” tariff targeting such countries.
The reciprocal tariffs, a cornerstone of Trump’s trade policy, are set to commence on Friday. India has historically maintained a significant trade surplus with the United States. The new tariffs and penalties are expected to have a considerable impact on India’s economy, which has been seeking to expand its trade ties with the U.S. while balancing its long-standing strategic relationship with Russia.
