Recent public opinion surveys show President Donald Trump’s approval ratings dropping to record second-term lows, according to an analysis presented on CNN by data analyst Harry Enten.
Speaking on air with anchor Kate Bolduan, Enten highlighted new polling data from three major organizations released this week. A CNN survey placed Trump’s approval rating at 34 percent, tied for his lowest score in the network’s polling history.
An AP-NORC poll recorded approval at 33 percent, while a Quinnipiac University survey registered 32 percent, which Enten identified as an all-time low for the president in that poll.
Enten described the downward trend in stark terms during the broadcast. “Is there a bottom? To me, it does not appear that there is one. Trump is heading toward an electoral black hole,” Enten said, comparing the shift to “one of those magician’s tricks where the floor just falls out from underneath you.”
Averaging the results from CNN, Quinnipiac, and AP-NORC yields a 33 percent approval rate. Enten compared that average to previous 21st-century presidents at the same stage of their second terms. Former President Barack Obama held a 41 percent approval rating at the equivalent point, while former President George W. Bush stood at 38 percent during the 2006 midterm election cycle amid the Iraq War.
According to Enten, Trump’s current figures represent the lowest point for any modern commander-in-chief at this stage of a second presidency. “You have to go all the way back to Richard Nixon to find a lower approval rating at this point in a second term,” Enten noted, referencing the summer of 1974 shortly before Nixon resigned from office.
