A group of five Eastern European detainees, including prominent Polish journalist Andrzej Poczobut, was released from Belarusian and Russian custody Sunday following a deal announced by President Donald J. Trump.
The release marks the culmination of months of negotiations involving a special presidential envoy and direct appeals from foreign heads of state.
The group consists of three Polish nationals and two Moldovans who had been held in various detention facilities. Among those freed is Poczobut, a high-profile figure whose imprisonment had become a point of diplomatic tension between Warsaw and Minsk.
President Trump stated that the groundwork for this specific release began during a meeting in September, when Polish President Karol Nawrocki personally requested American assistance in securing Poczobut’s freedom.

John Coale, the Special Presidential Envoy, led the American efforts to negotiate the terms of the release. Trump credited Coale with “pushing hard” to finalize the deal and ensuring the safe exit of the five individuals. In a statement posted to Truth Social, the President characterized the event as a fulfillment of American commitments to international partners.
“The United States delivers for our Allies, and Friends,” Trump wrote, specifically noting the cooperation of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko.
Details regarding the specific conditions of the release or whether a prisoner swap took place were not immediately provided by the administration. Trump concluded his announcement by expressing gratitude to Lukashenko, describing the Belarusian leader’s role in the process as one of “cooperation and friendship.”
The released prisoners are expected to be reunited with their families in Poland and Moldova following standard debriefing and medical evaluations.
