President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Saturday night to celebrate a monumental moment in sports history: the New York Knicks capturing their first NBA championship since 1973. Moments after the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5, the president shared his excitement over the team’s legendary comeback victories and delivered a special shout-out to backup center Mitchell Robinson.
Trump directed his initial congratulations to Knicks owner and longtime friend James Dolan, praising the sheer resilience the franchise showed on the court.
“Congratulations to Jim Dolan and the New York Knicks!!!” Trump wrote. “What a year it has been but, even more so, what incredible playoff wins we have all witnessed, especially the last four – Maybe the greatest in the history of basketball.”
The president’s enthusiastic praise perfectly captured the magic of the series. Trump then turned his attention to the players who made it happen. He highlighted NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson while also recognizing Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Robinson. Just last week, Robinson hinted at supporting the president in a comment left on a viral TikTok reel, and Trump made sure to return the loyalty.
“Tonight, a superstar was born,” Trump stated in his post. “His name is Jalen Brunson, and there are others, including, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and great Patriot, Mitchell Robinson! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
The president’s assessment of the team’s historic run was spot-on. In Saturday’s title-clincher, Brunson put on a superstar performance, scoring 45 points to erase a 16-point deficit. The point guard put up 13 straight points in the fourth quarter alone, and his final score broke the Knicks’ franchise record for points in a Finals game. He easily surpassed Willis Reed’s legendary 38-point performance against the Los Angeles Lakers in 1970.
New York trailed by double digits in all four of their Finals victories, proving the president right about these being some of the greatest playoff wins in history. Just days before securing the championship, the Knicks rallied from 29 points down in Game 4 to win 107-106. That game was decided by an Anunoby tip-in with just 1.2 seconds remaining on the clock, officially marking the largest comeback in NBA Finals history.
Brunson’s former Villanova teammates, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart, combined for 27 points in the Game 5 victory. On the other side of the court, Dylan Harper led the Spurs with 25 points, while Victor Wembanyama anchored the defense with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks.
With President Trump and thousands of traveling New York fans cheering them on, the Knicks closed out the series in Texas to finally put an end to a 53-year championship drought.
