President Trump announced that the United States is on the verge of a diplomatic breakthrough with Iran, asserting that negotiators have conceded to nearly all American demands. Speaking in an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” host Joe Kernen, Trump emphasized that his administration is looking for a diplomatic resolution rather than forcing a regime change, despite executing multiple military strikes against the country over the last two weeks.
During the interview, Trump compared Iran’s historical behavior to that of a “spoiled child” that had been allowed to act as the “bully of the Middle East” for 47 years. He sharply criticized the Obama administration’s handling of the region, specifically pointing to a $1.7 billion cash transfer delivered to Iran.
Trump claimed that the previous administration’s financial payouts resulted in increased nuclear research, weapons, and missiles rather than stability, adding that “how a Jewish person can vote for a Democrat is beyond me” given his own record of support for Israel.
The president laid out his primary objective for the ongoing negotiations, stating simply that Iran “cannot have a nuclear weapon.” He framed his recent actions as a pragmatic approach to avoid a prolonged military conflict, contrasting his timeline with lengthy historical American involvements in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Korea.
While pursuing talks, Trump detailed heavy military actions taken by the U.S. in response to recent Iranian provocations, including an incident where an Iranian drone was sent toward a U.S. ship.
Trump stated that the U.S. military had severely degraded Iran’s capabilities, claiming its navy, air force, and radar systems had been “ripped apart” and its leadership ranks depleted.
Despite asserting that the U.S. could completely wipe out Iran’s remaining missiles, Trump maintained that the current administration is focused on finalized terms, concluding that the two nations are actively negotiating and that Iran has already agreed to the core U.S. requirements.
