Trump Demands Bipartisan Action As Bill To ‘Save College Sports’ Hits Capitol Hill

President Donald Trump issued a statement on Truth Social calling for immediate legislative action to address what he described as a financial and structural crisis in collegiate athletics.

In his post, Trump characterized the current state of college sports as a total “mess” and a “catastrophic situation,” warning that ongoing legal battles and shifting regulations could eventually lead to the bankruptcy of major university athletic programs. He specifically noted that women’s sports and the U.S. Olympic pipeline are at the greatest risk.

“College Sports are turning into Pro Sports, except with absolutely no rules, a result no one wants,” Trump wrote. He stated that university presidents, conference commissioners, student-athletes, coaches, and athletic directors had personally complained to him about the situation, comparing the current trajectory to “a freight train that can’t be stopped” and noting that schools were “losing Hundreds of Millions of Dollars a year.”

The statement highlighted recent steps taken by the administration, including a roundtable discussion held a few months ago featuring sports executives, student-athletes, and political leaders. While Trump previously signed an executive order targeting the issue, he maintained that a legislative fix remains the most stable path forward.

Trump expressed gratitude toward Senators Ted Cruz, Eric Schmitt, Maria Cantwell, and Chris Coons for introducing the Protect College Sports Act. According to the president, the proposed law resolves urgent issues facing universities and student-athletes, calling it perhaps “the last chance to save College Sports, and Colleges themselves, before it’s too late.”

Additionally, Trump thanked House Speaker Mike Johnson and Leader Steve Scalise for their ongoing efforts on the matter. The president concluded by urging both chambers of Congress to collaborate on a final bipartisan bill for him to sign this summer, stating, “WE HAVE TO SAVE COLLEGE SPORTS!”
