In a move certain to ignite controversy, President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday his formal designation of Antifa as a “major terrorist organization.” The announcement was made in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, where the President also called for a thorough investigation into the group’s financial backers.

“I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A. Patriots that I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION,” Trump wrote. He continued, “I will also be strongly recommending that those funding ANTIFA be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices.”

The designation marks an escalation in the President’s rhetoric against the loosely organized, far-left movement. Antifa, short for “anti-fascist,” is a decentralized coalition of activists rather than a formal, hierarchical organization.

This lack of a central structure has previously led law enforcement and legal experts to question the practical and legal implications of designating it as a single entity.

While federal law defines domestic terrorism, there is no specific statute that allows for the formal designation of a domestic group as a terrorist organization, unlike the process for foreign terrorist organizations. Legal experts are sure to note that the First Amendment’s protections for free speech and association would likely make any such designation vulnerable to legal challenges.

The White House has not yet provided further details on how the designation will be implemented or what new legal powers it will grant to federal agencies. The announcement comes as the administration has vowed to crack down on what it has described as a “vast domestic terror movement.”
