President Donald Trump abruptly escalated the United States’ pressure campaign against Tehran on Monday, announcing immediate 25% tariffs on all nations trading with Iran. The sweeping economic maneuver aims to isolate the Islamic Republic as its crackdown on nationwide protests turns increasingly bloody, with the death toll now nearing 600.

In a social media post that caught global markets off guard, Trump declared the levies “effective immediately.” The move targets major global economies that continue to do business with Tehran, placing nations like China, Brazil, Turkey, and Russia directly in the crosshairs of U.S. trade policy.

The economic strike comes alongside a severe warning regarding military intervention. President Trump stated that his administration believes Iran is “starting to cross” a critical red line regarding the use of deadly force against unarmed demonstrators. Consequently, the White House and national security officials are currently weighing “very strong options” to address the violence.

The situation on the ground in Iran has deteriorated rapidly as the unrest enters its third week. Nearly 600 people have been killed in the clashes, and a state-imposed communications blackout has kept the country in digital darkness for over three days.

Tensions have already spilled beyond Iran’s borders. In Los Angeles, a driver was detained after steering a U-Haul truck into a crowd of anti-regime protesters, injuring one man. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have issued their own ultimatum, warning that any direct American military intervention would trigger retaliatory strikes against U.S. bases and commercial interests in the region.

With the imposition of these new tariffs, the U.S. has signaled that the window for diplomacy is closing, shifting the conflict from a regional uprising into a global economic standoff.
