President Donald Trump escalated his war of words with Canadian leadership on Tuesday, stating that the United States is considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” and rejecting accusations that his administration sought to undermine the French language in Canada.
In a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump tied the proposed name change directly to the deteriorating economic relationship between the two countries.
“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote.
The president also responded to criticism regarding negotiations over cultural and linguistic provisions, directly targeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
“I would never interfere with Canadians speaking French! In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing,” Trump posted. “This lie was made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec. I love French Canadians!”
The remarks come amid an intensifying trade standoff that began over the weekend. On Monday, Trump announced plans to impose 50% tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel starting January 1, 2027.
“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years,” Trump wrote on Monday, pointing to Canadian agricultural duties and a $60 billion trade deficit. “Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada will be treated like a State no longer! On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US! They do 95% of their business with the U.S., with us, the exact opposite!”
The cross-border dispute ignited early Saturday when Washington enacted 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, affecting roughly 5% of Canada’s annual exports to the U.S., on items ranging from tongue depressors to hockey sticks.
The duties followed the collapse of eleventh-hour trade talks late Friday. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said negotiations failed after Canada declined to finalize the agreement and walked back commitments on key sectors like steel, aluminum, autos, and lumber. Greer described the American proposal as a “forward-looking” offer that featured “a historic economic and national security partnership.”
Carney countered that Washington presented terms that were “unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal,” prompting him to suspend talks and recall Canada’s negotiating delegation to Ottawa.
“Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses,” Carney said, adding that his government will introduce aid packages for affected domestic industries and workers.
Lake Ontario forms part of the international border between New York state and the Canadian province of Ontario, representing a key shipping artery within the shared Great Lakes system. The ongoing dispute leaves the future of trilateral trade across the United States, Canada, and Mexico increasingly uncertain.
