President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself in a post published Wednesday on Truth Social.
In the post, Trump questioned whether the strategically vital waterway should be rebranded following what he described as American control over the area.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote. “Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Oman and Iran, connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It serves as one of the world’s most critical maritime transit routes, handling roughly a fifth of the global petroleum supply.
Under international maritime law, the Strait of Hormuz is recognized as an international strait where foreign vessels exercise the right of transit passage, bounded by the territorial waters of Iran and Oman.
The remarks follow an escalation of military activity in the Middle East, during which U.S. forces launched strikes against Iranian military targets and naval assets in and around the waterway.
Trump has previously referred to the corridor as new U.S. territory during public remarks and social media posts, while Iranian officials have rejected U.S. claims of jurisdiction over the passage.
