President Donald Trump floated the idea of nominating Texas Senator Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court during an event, joking that the move would win unanimous support from political rivals who simply want Cruz out of Congress.
Speaking with Cruz standing just feet away, Trump reflected on their political history, describing the senator as a “very tough competitor” from their past campaign days before they eventually became close allies. Trump highly praised Cruz’s professional background, explicitly calling him a “brilliant lawyer.”
The president then shared an anecdote about a suggestion he received regarding a potential judicial appointment for the Texas Republican. According to Trump, an unnamed individual asked if he would ever consider putting Cruz on the highest court in the country because of his legal credentials.
“Well, he’s the only one I can think of that’s going to get a 100 votes,” Trump recounted saying during the event. “All Republicans will vote for him, all Democrats will vote for him because they want to get him the hell out of the Senate.”
While the remark drew laughter from the crowd, Trump concluded his thoughts by indicating that the idea remains a practical option for his administration under the right political circumstances.
He noted that if he were ever facing a particularly difficult confirmation battle for a Supreme Court vacancy, he would seriously consider making the nomination.
“No, if I was having a hard time with getting the votes, I would appoint Ted Cruz,” Trump said.
