President Trump called on House Republicans to initiate “impeachment” proceedings against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries this weekend, following the Brooklyn Democrat’s scathing remarks regarding the Supreme Court.
The friction began after the high court struck down Louisiana’s congressional map, a move that weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and drew a sharp rebuke from Democratic leadership.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump labeled Jeffries a “Low-IQ individual” and questioned why the lawmaker hasn’t faced formal charges for calling the Supreme Court “illegitimate.” Trump drew a direct comparison to his own political history, posting, “After saying such a thing, isn’t he subject to Impeachment? I got impeached for A PERFECT PHONE CALL. Where are you Republicans? Why not get it started?”
Legal experts note that members of Congress are not actually subject to impeachment, a process constitutionally reserved for the president, vice president, and civil officers like federal judges.

To remove a sitting lawmaker, Congress must instead use an expulsion process, which requires a difficult-to-reach two-thirds majority vote. Jeffries responded to the President’s social media posts on X, simply writing, “Jeffries Derangement Syndrome.”
The clash follows a controversial ruling where the Supreme Court determined that Louisiana had engaged in unconstitutional racial gerrymandering.
Jeffries reacted to the decision by stating, “Today’s decision by this illegitimate Supreme Court majority strikes a blow against the Voting Rights Act. The extremists have completely and totally failed America. So they’ve concluded, aided and abetted by the Trump Court, that they have to cheat to win.”

While Trump was acquitted twice by the Senate following impeachments related to a 2019 phone call with Ukraine and the January 6 Capitol riot, he has also been a vocal critic of the judiciary when rulings have gone against his administration.
Earlier this year, Trump lashed out at the justices for blocking certain tariffs, calling them “unpatriotic” and “disloyal.”
With the November midterm elections approaching, the tension between the White House and the top House Democrat signals a high-stakes battle for control of the lower chamber, where a Democratic win could lead to a wave of new subpoenas and investigations into the current administration.
