The diplomatic stalemate between Washington and Tehran has reached a critical turning point following the collapse of high-stakes negotiations.
In a Sunday interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley backed the administration’s decision to walk away from the table, signaling a shift toward more aggressive military and economic maneuvers to neutralize Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The breakdown occurred after U.S. and Iranian negotiators remained deadlocked over a 15-point American plan and a 10-point Iranian proposal. Haley credited Vice President JD Vance for ending the talks, stating that Iran’s refusal to halt nuclear production or cease threats to the Strait of Hormuz made further dialogue a waste of time.
“The fact that he walked away because he saw there was no communication that could be had… shows they’re not letting them win,” Haley told host Dana Bash.

The focus has now shifted to the enriched uranium currently held by Iran. When asked if the U.S. should deploy military assets to physically remove the material, Haley suggested that a specialized military intervention is likely the only remaining path.
She described a potential mission involving Special Operations forces that could take a week to 10 days. “I think that’s probably what it’s going to come down to,” Haley said. “It’s dangerous. It’s not something that we can just sit and think it’s casual. I think they have to do it.”
On the economic front, the administration is moving to break Iran’s “stranglehold” on the global economy. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for 20% of the world’s oil and a third of its fertilizer, is currently seeing only a fraction of its normal traffic.
A backlog of roughly 400 ships has accumulated as Iran uses the waterway as leverage. Haley emphasized that the administration intends to “de-mine” and secure the strait to remove Tehran’s primary economic weapon.
The former ambassador also raised alarms regarding foreign interference, specifically pointing to Russia and China. She noted that Russian intelligence was instrumental in recent strikes against regional bases and oil fields, while China has continued to supply Iran with ballistic missile components and air defense systems.
Haley went as far as suggesting that President Trump should reconsider his upcoming summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. “I don’t think he should meet with them until they agree to stop helping the Iranians,” she stated, arguing that the U.S. must be more aggressive in confronting Beijing’s support for the regime.

Domestically, the interview touched on the 2028 political landscape. While Haley praised the administration’s handling of immigration and its “strong” stance against adversaries, she confirmed she does not intend to run for president again. Regarding Vice President Vance’s future as the potential GOP nominee, Haley remained non-committal, noting that “a year is a lifetime in politics.”
For now, the administration’s “maximum pressure” strategy has moved beyond the boardroom. With the diplomatic doors closed, the White House appears focused on weakening the Iranian regime through direct economic intervention and the potential use of elite military units to finalize the mission of denuclearization.
