President Donald J. Trump has deployed federal resources to Portland, Oregon, in a move the administration says is intended to “crush violent Radical Left terrorism” and halt the “Antifa-led hellfire” that has plagued the city.

The administration asserted that the situation in Portland is “premeditated anarchy,” not legitimate protest, and is taking action to protect citizens, property, and federal officers who have been allegedly subjected to repeated assaults and harassment.

According to a White House statement, the deployment is a direct response to an ongoing “siege” of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in south Portland, which militants have reportedly breached using a stop sign as a battering ram, hurled explosives, burned an American flag, and violently attacked officers with various projectiles.

The statement also referenced a “guillotine” being rolled out by the militants and reported that dozens have been arrested and charged with crimes including arson, assaulting federal officers, and resisting arrest.

The administration detailed a lengthy history of what it characterizes as violence and destruction in Portland at the hands of “Antifa and the Radical Left,” dating back to 2016, including:

  • The burning of more than a dozen Portland Police Bureau training vehicles in May 2024.
  • Violent attacks on right-wing demonstrators with explosives and chemical spray in August 2021.
  • The toppling of statues, including those of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, during an “Indigenous Peoples Day of Rage” riot in October 2020.
  • A 2020 stretch of “100 days of carnage and violence” that included rioting, looting, and attacks on a local courthouse and federal officers.

Trump has maintained that while “Democrat politicians deny reality,” the federal intervention is necessary to restore law and order to a city scarred by premeditated anarchy. The deployment is the latest in the President’s national focus on crime and political violence.

The move comes amidst reports that the Pentagon has authorized the federalization of 200 members of the Oregon National Guard, though local and state officials in Oregon have publicly opposed the deployment and filed a federal lawsuit challenging the administration’s authority, arguing there is “no insurrection” or threat to national security necessitating military intervention.

The White House press release concludes that the “Radical Left’s reign of terror in Portland ends now.”
