President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he is evaluating the feasibility of delivering a major speech to replace several musical acts who recently withdrew from the upcoming Freedom 250 concert series.
The concert series, scheduled to take place between June 25 and July 10 on the National Mall, is part of the Great American State Fair celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. The event is organized by Freedom 250, a public-private partnership established by the Trump administration. This past week, five of the nine scheduled musical acts—Bret Michaels, Young MC, the Commodores, Morris Day and the Time, and Martina McBride—announced they would no longer perform.
The departing artists stated they withdrew because they wanted to avoid political discourse or felt misled regarding the nonpartisan nature of the event. Michaels said he dropped out after the event became “something much more divisive than what I agreed to be part of,” citing safety concerns. Young MC stated he was “never told about any political involvement with the event,” while McBride noted she believed the concert was a “nonpartisan event” but found that premise “turned out to be misleading.”
Trump responded to the artist withdrawals on Truth Social on Saturday, criticizing the musicians for getting “the yips” and describing them as “highly paid, Third Rate ‘Artists’” and “overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain.”
In his post, Trump suggested he could headline the event himself to replace the empty slots.
“I am thinking about bringing the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World, the man who gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime, and he does so without a guitar, the man who loves our Country more than anyone else, and the man who some say is the Greatest President in History (THE GOAT!), DONALD J. TRUMP, to take the place of these highly paid, Third Rate “Artists,” and give a major speech, rallying the Country forward like I have done ever since being President!” Trump wrote.
The president stated he wants to be surrounded by “Happy People, Smart People, Successful People, and People that know how to WIN,” and noted he was ordering his representatives to look into staging an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” in Washington, D.C., at the same scheduled time and location.
“Only Great Patriots invited — It will be a Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America!” he wrote, using language similar to his past rally calls. In a subsequent post Saturday night, Trump suggested canceling the concert format entirely, writing, “Cancel it, just like I canceled my involvement with the failing and unsafe to be in Kennedy Center.”
Danielle Alvarez, a spokesperson for Freedom 250, confirmed on X Saturday afternoon that Trump will still open the event on Wednesday, June 24.
“As the visionary behind the Great American State Fair, we are excited to announce that President Trump will personally kick off this historic celebration on Wednesday, June 24 in an opening ceremony celebrating America’s 250th birthday,” Alvarez said.
The artist departures follow ongoing confusion surrounding the organization of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, which are currently being managed by two separate entities. America250 is a nonprofit created to support a nonpartisan congressional commission. Freedom 250 was established by the Trump administration but also labels itself as a nonpartisan nonprofit.
In a statement to NBC on Friday, Freedom 250 spokesperson Rachel Reisner defended the group’s objective, stating they are “singularly focused on celebrating America’s 250th anniversary and bringing Americans together around this historic milestone.”
The concert series is one of several proposals the Trump administration has generated to mark the nation’s semiquincentennial. Other proposed ideas include erecting a triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., distributing a 250-dollar bill and limited-edition passports featuring Trump’s likeness, hosting a youth athletic competition called the Patriot Games, and staging a UFC cage match on the White House lawn.
Following his comments about the concert lineup, Trump posted a series of graphics and illustrations to Truth Social featuring families celebrating under the caption “America Is Back!” He also shared AI-generated photos, including one of himself alongside former NFL quarterback Tom Brady, and another depicting him dunking a basketball over New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
