President Cites “War-ravaged” City and ICE Facilities “Under Siege” by Antifa and Domestic Terrorists
President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he is directing the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to deploy “all necessary Troops” to Portland, Oregon, a city he recently described as experiencing “anarchy” and being “out of control.”
The directive, shared in a post on the President’s Truth Social platform, stated the troops would be sent to “protect war-ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists.”
The President’s post also included an authorization for “Full Force, if necessary,” though he did not elaborate on the specific meaning or scope of this authorization.
The order follows a request, according to the post, from Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
President Trump has repeatedly condemned the situation in the West Coast city in recent days. During remarks in the Oval Office on Thursday, he claimed that “anarchy” was occurring in Portland. “You go out to Portland, people die out there… Portland is, I don’t know how anybody lives there. It’s amazing, but it’s, it’s anarchy out there. That’s what they want. They want anarchy,” he said.
On Friday, the President reiterated his criticism, stating in separate Oval Office comments that the situation has been “going on for years” and that people in Portland are “out of control, crazy. We’re going to stop that very soon.”
The move marks a significant escalation in the federal government’s response to ongoing unrest and protests in Portland, which the President’s post characterizes as an attack by “Antifa, and other domestic terrorists” on federal facilities.
