President Donald Trump pushed back against Republican claims that he is indifferent to keeping a congressional majority, pointing to his travel schedule and fundraising efforts ahead of the midterm elections.
During an interview with Punchbowl News co-founder Jake Sherman, Trump directly disputed private criticism from Capitol Hill suggesting he would proceed with his agenda regardless of which party controls Congress.
“No, it’s not right,” Trump said when asked about those characterizations. “And I’d love to win. I’m fighting hard. I just got back from a trip. I was in California. I was in Nevada, all over the place. No, I’m going to fight.”
Trump highlighted an upcoming political gathering in Texas aimed at bolstering party efforts, describing it as a “mini convention in Dallas” that originated from his own planning. He noted that significant resources have been gathered for the midterm push, adding, “We raised a lot of money. I raised a lot of money for just this purpose. I’ll put in a lot of money.”
Emphasizing the stakes of the upcoming elections, Trump argued that winning control of Congress is essential for the nation’s future. He specifically pointed to Abdul El-Sayed following his victory in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Michigan.
“It’s very important for the country that we win because you have people getting in office right now who will destroy this country,” Trump said, calling El-Sayed a “disaster for the country.”
Evaluating the Michigan candidate’s public delivery, Trump acknowledged El-Sayed’s communication skills while warning against his platform. “Got a good line of stuff. I watched him. He speaks well, speaks okay. Seemed better, but I’ll tell you what, guys like that get in, they’ll destroy this country,” Trump said.
