President Donald J. Trump has released a collection of newly declassified intelligence documents, asserting that the materials set the record straight regarding foreign interference in U.S. elections and information that was intentionally kept from him and the public.
According to the newly released documents, foreign nations—including China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea—possess the technological capabilities to compromise American election infrastructure. The declassified files state that Venezuela’s Maduro regime developed methods to digitally alter vote totals in an undetectable manner.
A central disclosure in the materials alleges that China obtained the personal data of 220 million American voters during the 2020 election cycle, covering names, phone numbers, addresses, and party affiliations.
The release states that intelligence agencies were aware of the data breach across at least 18 states but did not report it to the president or Congress at the time.
The declassified documents also contain internal communications from intelligence and law enforcement officials indicating an intentional effort to withhold information. In one included log, an analyst wrote, “We have deliberately massaged our one pending [President’s Daily Brief] to avoid any direct links to the election.” Another internal quote from an FBI official stated, “I’m basically running a shadow government across the FBI at this point.”
Additionally, the release details findings from a Department of Homeland Security review, which identified roughly 278,000 non-citizens registered to vote in federal elections across four states that cooperated with the inquiry. The documents also note a past investigation in Michigan where canvassers reportedly forged voter registrations and submitted applications for nonexistent individuals in exchange for gift cards prior to the 2020 election.
To support arguments regarding structural vulnerabilities, the documentation references a bipartisan Commission on Federal Election Reform finding that absentee ballots represent “the largest source of potential voter fraud,” alongside data from the MIT Election Data + Science Lab noting higher frequencies of fraud in mail-in voting compared to in-person voting.
Following the disclosure, President Trump directed the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Justice, the CIA, and the FBI to launch an investigation into why these intelligence assessments were withheld, noting that those involved could face potential criminal charges. The president also called on Congress to pass the SAVE America Act to update federal election security measures.
