The 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner ended in panic and a massive security response Saturday night after a shooter opened fire inside the Washington Hilton. While President Donald Trump initially suggested the gala might continue, he has since confirmed that law enforcement has ordered a full evacuation of the premises and that he will address the nation from the White House.
The chaos began when Secret Service agents suddenly swarmed the head table, shouting “Shots fired!” according to reports from CNN. In a matter of seconds, President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Cabinet members including Pete Hegseth and Marco Rubio were rushed out of the ballroom through a secure exit.
Witnesses inside the banquet hall described a scene of terror as the sound of five to eight shots echoed through the room. Hundreds of journalists, celebrities, and political figures dove under tables for cover. “Out of the way, sir!” security personnel yelled as they cleared a path for the protectees. Others in the crowd shouted for guests to duck as the Secret Service and local police took control of the floor.
Despite the violence, no injuries were immediately reported. A law enforcement official confirmed that a shooter had opened fire and was eventually taken into custody. As the building was placed under lockdown, National Guard members took up tactical positions in the hallways, allowing people to leave the hotel but prohibiting anyone from re-entering.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, who was among those evacuated from the main room, shared a video update from the scene. “I have been taken out of the ballroom after the sound of the shots fired,” Pirro said. “The Secret Service is now in charge of this building, this hotel. I just spoke to Mayor Muriel Bowser. She is on her way and (Police) Chief Jeffery Carroll is on his way. He will be in charge as soon as he gets here.”
For a brief period, it appeared the event might attempt to resume. Weijia Jiang of CBS News, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, took the stage just before 9:00 p.m. to address the remaining crowd. “Our program is going to resume momentarily,” Jiang said. “And we will have more details to share. Also momentarily, but for now, please just be patient as we figure out just how much time will be, but it shouldn’t be that much longer. Thank you very much. Thank you.”
President Trump initially echoed this sentiment in a statement praising the swift action of the authorities. “Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely,” Trump said. “The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again.”
However, following a final security assessment, the President issued a second update confirming the night was officially over.
“Law Enforcement has requested that we leave the premises, consistent with protocol, which we will do, immediately,” the President stated. “I will be giving a press conference in 30 minutes from the White House Press Briefing Room. The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition. We will be speaking to you in a half an hour. I have spoken with all the representatives in charge of the event, and we will be rescheduling within 30 days.”
The D.C. Metropolitan Police and Secret Service continue to maintain a heavy presence around the Washington Hilton. The President’s upcoming press conference is expected to provide more details on the identity of the shooter and the nature of the threat that halted the nation’s most prominent media gala.
