CNN host Chris Cuomo spent years berating former President Donald Trump.
But now, as an ethics debacle ensnares Cuomo and clouds his future at one of America’s two biggest left-wing networks, Trump may get the last laugh.
“Great news for television viewers,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday through his spokeswoman at his Save America PAC. “They have just suspended Chris Cuomo indefinitely!”
“The big question is,” Trump added, “was it because of his horrendous ratings, which in all fairness have permeated CNN and MSDNC, or was it because his brother is no longer Governor? Probably both.”
“In any event, Fredo is gone!”
Trump’s gleeful reaction, including his use of the reference to Cuomo as the dimwit brother from “The Godfather,” came as CNN finally encountered a Cuomo scandal it could not ignore.
CNN announced an indefinite suspension of Cuomo after news surfaced about his role in advising his older brother, former New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the target of a sexual harassment lawsuit.
The revelation became public months ago, but Cuomo, in on-air comments, denied he had any substantive role in his brother’s legal defense. That changed recently after New York’s Democratic attorney general released documents showing Chris Cuomo was an integral part of Andrew’s defense advisers.
He suggested talking points for Andrew’s legal team and even tapped his journalistic sources to track down information on his brother’s accusers.
In a statement, CNN said the details “raise serious questions,” and “point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew.”
Since the onset of the pandemic CNN has faced other moments of ethical controversies involving Chris Cuomo.
One was to allow him to frequently interview his brother as the elder Cuomo emerged last year as the go-to voice criticizing Trump during the pandemic.
Chris Cuomo also was criticized for lashing out at a critic.
Last year CNN licensed Cuomo to make a big production out of his completing quarantine after contracting COVID-19. But then it turned out that Cuomo had broken quarantine to travel to a site where he was having a new home built.
A passerby exposed Cuomo’s hypocrisy, which forced him to publicly denounce the man as a “jackass loser fat-tire biker.”
