A policy shift regarding gender-affirming care for minors has created a visible rift between President Donald Trump and his traditional conservative base, leading to a swift reversal of the administration’s public position.
In an initial statement posted to Truth Social, the President indicated that gender-transition surgeries for children could be permissible provided there was “express written approval of the parents.” This nuanced position, while seeking to restrict access, stopped short of the total ban many of his allies have long demanded.
The fallout from his original post was immediate.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed her frustration on X, stating she was “absolutely done” and would consider registering as an independent if the GOP supports these procedures even with parental sign-off.
“The House passed my bill… that makes it a felony to trans any child under 18 even if their parents are supporting or pushing it,” Greene wrote. “Now Trump is reversing his stance? What is wrong with him?”
Daily Wire commentator Matt Walsh echoed this, arguing that focusing on consent misses the mark.
“The kids who are mutilated almost always have parental consent,” Walsh posted. “The consent of the parents is not the issue. The issue is that the procedure is barbaric and insane, no matter if parents agree to it or not.”
In a move that appears to address this internal criticism, the President subsequently deleted the original post and replaced it with a new list of priorities titled “THE SAVE AMERICA ACT.”
The updated platform removes the exception for parental consent entirely. The fifth point of the new declaration now simply reads: “NO TRANSGENDER MUTILATION SURGERY FOR CHILDREN.”
This pivot aligns the President more closely with the broader push to restrict gender-affirming care for minors nationwide, which his administration has previously described as “mutilation.”
During his 2026 State of the Union address, Trump had initially called for a ban on states allowing procedures without parental consent, a stance supported by Department of Education moves to ensure schools share gender identity information with families.
However, the deletion of the original Truth Social post suggests a move away from the “parental rights” compromise toward a total prohibition.
The debate highlights a growing tension within the party between the protection of parental authority and the total prohibition of gender-related medical interventions for minors.
While the administration’s broader agenda continues to focus on voter identification and the exclusion of biological males from women’s sports, the specific handling of medical transitions for minors remains a flashpoint for his most vocal supporters.
