President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday directing federal health officials to review national childhood vaccination schedules and recommend spacing out certain routine shots over separate visits.
According to a White House fact sheet, the order calls for recommending that the combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine be administered as three individual shots during distinct medical appointments.
Single-pathogen vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella are not currently available for purchase or distribution in the United States.
The directive instructs the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct further research into vaccine safety and scheduling. While the executive order establishes federal guidance, legal authority to establish and enforce mandatory immunization requirements for school entry rests with individual state governments.
Public health organizations note that spacing out vaccine schedules increases the time windows during which children remain unimmunized against targeted diseases before completing their multi-visit series. Decades of clinical testing and safety monitoring govern combination vaccines, and scientific research has established no link between childhood immunizations and autism.
The executive order aligns with ongoing efforts within the administration to investigate potential factors related to autism rates. During a Cabinet meeting last month, President Trump addressed Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. regarding the status of federal research on the topic, with the secretary noting that answers will be made available soon.
Recent survey data indicates that a majority of the American public supports school vaccination requirements, though opinions vary by political affiliation. Prior to Monday’s executive order, recent administration health initiatives had focused primarily on prescription drug pricing and nutrition policy.
