Former President Donald Trump slammed his successor for cutting a deal with Iran over prisoners and billions in cash, arguing on social media that Republican lawmakers should invoke the 25th Amendment as a remedy.
Trump was reacting to news from Monday that President Joe Biden’s administration would swap five Iranians for five Americans now jailed in Iran and free up $6 billion of Iranian assets held by U.S. allies.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the money would not face U.S. sanctions imposed for Teheran’s support for international terrorism. National Security Council spokesman Adrienne Watson added that the administration was moving to secure the freedom of five “wrongfully held” Americans.

Republicans, however, were angry at the deal and also at the timing of the announcement. The news came on the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Trump reacted on Monday on Truth Social, his social media platform, saying, “Can you believe that Crooked Joe Biden is giving $6 Billion to the terrorist regime in Iran? That money (will) be used for terrorism all over the Middle East, and, indeed, the World.”
“This incompetent FOOL is absolutely destroying America. He had the audacity to announce this terrible deal today, September 11th. To pay for hostages will lead to kidnapping, ransom, and blackmail against Americans across the globe. I freed many dozens of our people from various unfriendly countries and never paid a dime!”
On Tuesday, Trump fired at Biden again.
“So, lets get this straight! We did a hostage TRADE with Iran. We gave them 5 very tough, smart people that they desperately wanted. We likewise got back 5 people BUT, we also gave them 6 BILLION DOLLARS!,” he said on Truth Social.
“How much of a kickback does Crooked Joe Biden get? Does anyone realize how much money 6 Billion Dollars is?”

“When I was President, I got back 58 hostages for ZERO money. Remember Pastor Brunson? It sets a TERRIBLE precedent. Republicans, call out the 25th Amendment, NOW! Biden is INCOMPETENT!”
Republicans joined Trump in bashing Biden over the deal.
Florida Rep. Cory Mills, for instance, said in a statement, “Biden fails to pay his respects on the anniversary of 9/11 to any of the sites on this historically tragic day, but makes a deal to swap five Iranian prisoners and unfreeze $6 billion to Iran’s regime.”
“I vehemently oppose this decision that will ultimately fund terrorist activities against Americans and our allies … This is the most corrupt and compromised administration in America’s history and he’s out to destroy America.”
Another Republican lawmaker, Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, asserted that Biden was “paying ransom to the world’s worst state sponsor of terrorism.”
