President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to deliver a stinging rebuke of comedian Bill Maher, calling on conservative media outlets to stop featuring the talk show host as a representative of Republican viewpoints.
In a lengthy post, Trump criticized Maher’s performance during a recent televised debate with California Governor Gavin Newsom, while also recounting a personal anecdote from a previous meeting between the two men at the White House.
Trump claimed that Maher appeared “nervous” and “scared” during an encounter in the Oval Office, alleging that the comedian’s first request upon entering was for a drink.
While Trump described the moment as “endearing,” he simultaneously labeled the behavior “absolutely pathetic,” arguing that Maher’s private demeanor differs significantly from his public persona.

The former President expressed frustration with Fox News and other right-leaning outlets for continuing to cite Maher, stating that the host does not represent the interests of the party.
The social media post primarily focused on Maher’s recent interaction with Governor Newsom. Trump alleged that Maher was “defenseless” and “totally deficient” as Newsom defended the state of California.
According to Trump, Newsom “lied about the facts” regarding the state’s economy and infrastructure. The former President pointed to several specific issues to counter Newsom’s claims, including the ongoing “railway catastrophe” that remains billions over budget, the rise in homelessness in major cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the fact that more people are currently leaving California than moving in.
Trump also used the post to credit himself and former EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin for efforts to rebuild homes destroyed by wildfires, claiming Newsom had previously blocked necessary water access.
He concluded his statement by calling Maher a “moron” and comparing him to late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, reiterating his demand that conservative networks stop treating Maher as a “relevant” voice in political discourse.
Neither Maher nor Newsom have issued a formal response to the former President’s comments.
