President Donald Trump didn’t hold back during a cabinet meeting on Thursday. He took aim at a plan supported by California Governor Gavin Newsom to build low-income housing in the Palisades. The area is known for its wealthy residents and was recently hit hard by wildfires. Trump made his position clear. He said the federal government would not help pay for it.

The meeting started with a talk about rebuilding homes lost in the fires. Trump said his team approved federal permits quickly. He blamed state and local leaders for slowing things down.

He specifically pointed a finger at Governor Newsom and the Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Trump said people are “dying to build their house,” but are stuck waiting on city paperwork.

Then the topic shifted to a new development. Trump brought up a proposal to put low-income housing in the middle of the rebuilding efforts. He called the idea a mistake. He argued that it would hurt property values for the people already living there. He told his team he would not let it happen.

“I’m not going to allow it to happen,” Trump said. He added that he knows a lot about building housing and thinks this specific plan is wrong for the area. He turned to his cabinet officials and gave a direct order to stop any money from going to the project.

“There’s going to be no financing for low-income housing,” he stated. He told them to focus only on helping residents rebuild the homes they lost. He even suggested letting homeowners build back 10 percent bigger as a “bonus” for their trouble.

The comments set up a new fight between the White House and California officials. Newsom has pushed for more affordable housing across the state. But Trump is using his control over federal money to block those plans in specific neighborhoods. For now, the message to California is simple.

The President wants the old houses back, but he doesn’t want the new low-income project.
