President Donald Trump is set to open the first official meeting of his Board of Peace today, a high-stakes diplomatic gamble that has drawn both global curiosity and some institutional pushback.

What began as a specific proposal for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip has rapidly transformed into a sprawling international body with the stated goal of resolving conflicts worldwide. While the White House has confirmed that officials from dozens of nations will be in attendance—either as formal members or observers—the guest list is notable for who is missing as much as for who is present.

The centerpiece of today’s summit is expected to be a massive financial package. Trump has already teased “historic” funding announcements, totaling billions of dollars, specifically earmarked for the rebuilding of Gaza.

Proponents of the plan argue that this direct, private-sector-influenced approach bypasses traditional bureaucratic delays, offering a faster route to stability in the war-torn region. By positioning the board as a pragmatic alternative to existing diplomatic channels, the administration is betting that financial leverage can succeed where decades of traditional statecraft have stalled.

However, the initiative is meeting significant friction from long-standing partners.

Several European nations and key American allies have publicly declined their invitations to join the board. These governments have expressed unease over the board’s expansive mandate and the inclusion of certain member states whose interests may not align with traditional Western diplomacy.

There is a sense of caution among these allies, who worry that joining such a body could undermine established international norms and complicate existing peace processes.

Beyond the immediate logistics of reconstruction, the Board of Peace is being viewed by many as a direct challenge to the United Nations. Trump has never made a secret of his disdain for the UN, frequently criticizing its efficiency and its perceived bias.

By creating a parallel organization for global conflict resolution, critics argue the administration is attempting to decentralize international power and diminish the UN’s influence.

Supporters, conversely, see it as a necessary disruption of a stagnant system. As the first session begins today, the world is watching to see if this new board will become a legitimate pillar of global diplomacy or remain a divisive outlier in international relations.
