President Donald Trump took to Truth Social Wednesday morning to announce a significant diplomatic breakthrough, describing a “long and thorough” phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Amidst a backdrop of global uncertainty, Trump characterized the conversation as “excellent,” signaling a potential warming of relations between the world’s two largest economies as he enters the second year of his current term.

The call covered an expansive list of high-stakes topics, ranging from traditional flashpoints like Taiwan and the military to current geopolitical crises including the Russia-Ukraine war and the situation in Iran. Economic interests were also front and center; the leaders reportedly discussed U.S. oil exports and a major commitment from Beijing regarding agricultural imports.

According to the President’s post, China is considering increasing its soybean purchases to 20 million tons for the current season, with a commitment to reach 25 million tons by next year—a move likely intended to shore up support within the American farming sector.

Beyond the immediate policy discussions, the call served to solidify plans for Trump’s upcoming trip to China, currently scheduled for April.

This visit is expected to be the first of several face-to-face meetings between the two leaders this year. Trump underscored the importance of their rapport, stating that both leaders realize the necessity of maintaining an “extremely good” personal relationship for the sake of global stability.
