President Donald Trump signed a new executive order directing the State and Treasury Departments to begin the process of designating specific chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). The move specifically targets the group’s subdivisions in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon, signaling a significant escalation in U.S. pressure on the transnational Islamist network.

The directive creates a strict timeline for the administration to act. Under the new order, the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury have 30 days to consult with intelligence agencies and submit a joint report on these chapters.

Following that report, officials are required to take appropriate action regarding the designations within 45 days.

In justifying the move, the White House cited specific threats to American interests and regional stability, pointing directly to the group’s alleged involvement in the conflict following the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel.

The text of the order accuses the military wing of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Lebanese chapter of joining forces with Hamas and Hezbollah to launch rocket attacks against Israeli targets. It further alleges that Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood leaders have provided material support to Hamas militants, while accusing a senior leader of the Egyptian chapter of explicitly calling for violence against U.S. partners.

“Such activities threaten the security of American civilians in the Levant and other parts of the Middle East,” the order states.

If finalized, the designations would categorize these chapters as both Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists. This status generally allows the U.S. government to freeze assets, block financial transactions, and prosecute individuals who provide material support to the designated groups.

The administration stated that the ultimate goal of the policy is to deprive these chapters of resources and eliminate their ability to carry out operations that destabilize the region.
