President Donald Trump has dismissed a newly released letter allegedly sent to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, calling it a “dead issue.”

The letter, which was part of a trove of documents released by the House Oversight Committee, has sparked a political firestorm, with some of the president’s own Republican allies joining Democrats in calling for more transparency.

“I don’t comment on something that’s a dead issue,” Trump told NBC News in a call Tuesday morning. “I gave all comments to the staff. It’s a dead issue.”

The Controversial Letter

The alleged 2003 letter, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, was part of a larger collection of documents subpoenaed from Epstein’s estate.

The note, which features a lewd drawing of a naked woman with the name “Donald” scrawled on it, lays out a conversation between Trump and Epstein.

White House officials have denied the letter’s authenticity, claiming the signature does not match the president’s current signature, though previous examples of his signature appear similar.

The president sued the Journal’s parent company, publisher, and two reporters for defamation in July, but the newspaper has stood by its reporting.

Bipartisan Calls for Transparency

The Epstein issue has caused a rare rift among Republicans, with some typically loyal Trump allies joining Democrats in the push for more information.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers, including Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA), are working to collect signatures to force a vote on whether the Justice Department should release more Epstein files.

Among the Republicans who have signed on to the effort are Reps. Nancy Mace (R-SC), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and Lauren Boebert (R-CO), all of whom are generally in lockstep with the White House’s messaging.

Their support for the measure signals a growing divide within the party and highlights the political complexity of the issue.
