President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took questions from reporters on Wednesday during the G7 summit in France, where Trump spoke at length about domestic voting laws, intelligence confirmations, and an upcoming deal with Iran.
The press conference quickly turned to domestic politics when Trump was asked about his decision to delay the confirmation hearing for his Director of National Intelligence nominee. Trump redirected his response toward congressional Democrats and surveillance legislation, stating he will refuse to sign the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) unless it is paired with the Save America Act.
“It was like a rush act by the Democrats, and they said they were going to approve FISA,” Trump said. “And I said, but we want FISA approved, but want the Save America Act approved. Voter ID, proof of citizenship, no mail-in ballots, with exceptions, like for the military, sick — you’re sick, or you’re traveling, disabled — very open and generous. We also want no men playing in women’s sports.”
Trump added that his demands included ending the “transgender mutilization of our children,” describing these policy points as priorities shared by the vast majority of the public. He also questioned the opposition to his intelligence pick, stating, “Why are they afraid of this guy? I mean, they’re so afraid of him. They’ll do anything not to have Pulte go in there. He’s a very capable guy, and they’re worried about that.”
The conversation shifted to foreign policy when a reporter asked about the finalization of a text regarding a potential agreement with Iran, questioning how confident the president was that a signing would occur this Friday.
Trump expressed optimism about the timeline but noted the unpredictable nature of high-stakes negotiations. “You know, deals are amazing. I’ve done them all my life,” Trump replied. “I’ve gone into deals that were 100%, and they don’t happen. I’ve gotten into deals that there was no chance of getting them done, and it happens, and they happen easily. So you never know with deals, do you?”
Despite the uncertainty, Trump stated he expects the agreement to move forward because Iran wants “to get back to a normal life” following heavy U.S. pressure. He traced the current diplomatic landscape back to major military and political moves from his previous administration, including the targeted killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani and the U.S. exit from the 2015 nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Trump described the JCPOA as “Barack Hussein Obama’s horrible deal that gave them a nuclear weapon,” noting that his subsequent deployment of B-2 bombers prevented Iran from obtaining a nuclear device.
Regarding the pending text, Trump clarified that it is currently structured as a memorandum of understanding, though he emphasized it is a long, highly detailed document that will eventually transition into a regular contract. He concluded by asserting that the U.S. holds the leverage if the deal falls through, pointing to the impact of recent military operations.
“We have the greatest military in the world. We had the greatest blockade. The naval blockade was 100% effective,” Trump said, stating that Iran’s navy and air force have been heavily compromised and that multiple tiers of the country’s leadership have been removed.
