President Donald J. Trump late Thursday issued a fiery call for Senate Republicans to immediately eliminate the filibuster—with the “Nuclear Option”—arguing the move is essential to end the ongoing government shutdown and counteract “Crazed Lunatics” on the Democratic side.
In a lengthy post on his social media platform, Truth Social, the President praised Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson for doing a “GREAT job,” but reserved his sharpest criticism for Democrats, whom he accused of suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS)” and having “lost all sense of WISDOM and REALITY.”
The President insisted that eliminating the 60-vote threshold required to pass most legislation in the Senate is the necessary “TRUMP CARD” for the Republican majority. He linked the filibuster’s continuation to the current budgetary impasse that has shut down parts of the federal government for weeks.
“It is now time for the Republicans to play their “TRUMP CARD,” and go for what is called the Nuclear Option — Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!” the President wrote. “If we did what we should be doing, it would IMMEDIATELY end this ridiculous, Country destroying ‘SHUT DOWN.'”
Trump pointed out that Democrats, while previously in power, “fought for three years to do this” to advance their own agenda, only failing due to Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. He argued that if Republicans don’t act now, Democrats will certainly scrap the rule the “first day they take office” to push through their own agenda.
The President also forcefully attacked Democratic demands in the spending negotiations, which Republicans have strongly opposed. He claimed that Democrats want to take “Trillions of Dollars to be taken from our Healthcare System and given to others, who are not deserving — People who have come into our Country illegally, many from prisons and mental institutions.”
He vowed that “This will hurt American citizens, and Republicans will not let it happen.”
Democrats have stated their demands are centered on reversing Medicaid cuts included in a recent Republican bill and extending Affordable Care Act subsidies for millions of Americans, denying the President’s claims about healthcare for undocumented immigrants.
Trump additionally warned that a Democrat-controlled government, made possible by an un-eliminated filibuster, would enact radical changes, including:
- Substantially expanding (PACK!) the United States Supreme Court.
- Making Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico States, thereby “automatically picking up 4 Senate seats, many House seats, and at least 8 Electoral Votes!”
He concluded by stating that eliminating the filibuster would not only end the shutdown but also allow the GOP to secure “the best Judges, the best U.S. Attorneys, the best of everything,” turning a concept once considered by then-President Barack Obama and former Majority Leader Harry Reid “in order to take advantage of the Republicans” into an opportunity for the GOP to “take advantage of the Democrats.”
