President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will formally request Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice (DOJ) open an investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s connections with a number of his perceived political opponents.
The announcement comes following the release of a tranche of emails and documents related to the late financier that have reignited political scrutiny. Trump characterized the growing focus on Epstein as a “hoax” and a “deflection” orchestrated by Democrats in the midst of the ongoing government shutdown.
“I will be asking AG, Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice, together with our great patriots at the FBI, to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s involvement and relationship with Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman, JP Morgan, Chase and many other people and institutions to determine what was going on with them,” Trump wrote.
The individuals named include former President Bill Clinton and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, both of whose names have surfaced in connection with Epstein following the recent release of files. Reid Hoffman is the co-founder of LinkedIn. The President’s call to action is viewed by some as a counter-offensive to shift the political pressure away from his administration and onto Democratic figures.
The move also arrives as House Republicans are facing internal pressure from their constituents and some colleagues to vote on an effort to compel the DOJ to release all of the Epstein files.
