Maryland Governor Wes Moore shared insight into his recent, unexpected communications with President Donald Trump during a Tuesday appearance on SiriusXM’s The Clay Cane Show.
When host Clay Cane asked about the frequency and nature of his contact with the White House, Moore revealed that the real estate mogul turned president reached out to him regarding a specific property. “He called me about a golf course a few weeks ago,” Moore said, clarifying that the conversation focused on a course situated on federal land.
Moore recounted his response to the president’s inquiry during the call. “I told him, I was like, ‘I’m waiting for permits, but we’re not just gonna create golf courses while all this stuff is going on. We need permits to be able to do this.'”
The interview quickly shifted from the specific phone call to the broader relationship between the Democratic governor and the Republican administration. Moore emphasized that while he is willing to coordinate with federal officials to benefit his constituents, he maintains a strict boundary.
“I’ve been very clear with the people of my state, is that I will work with anyone, but I will bow to no one,” Moore stated. He added that he welcomes ideas that “create pathways for work and wages and wealth” for Marylanders.
However, Moore strongly criticized several ongoing federal initiatives, arguing that his state is being disproportionately affected by recent executive actions. According to the governor, the federal administration has terminated more than 31,000 federal employees in Maryland over the span of a year, a figure he noted is higher than any other state in the nation. He characterized this as “a unique targeting of the state of Maryland.”
Moore further voiced opposition to federal policies that he stated could potentially remove 180,000 Maryland residents from healthcare coverage. He pledged to actively resist measures that he believes negatively impact the state’s disability community, LGBTQIA+ community, and Black and Brown communities.
“We will fight, and I will go and protect our people,” Moore said. “And so that’s the thing that I think does become really important. And I think the thing that the people of the state of Maryland know about me very clearly is, like I said, I’m not a simp, I’m a soldier.”
The interview concluded on a lighter note when Cane brought up the unusual compliments Trump has given to certain political figures, drawing a comparison between Moore and New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani. Cane reminded the governor that Trump had previously referred to him as a “beauty.”
Moore confirmed the past exchange, laughing as he recalled the president’s remarks. “Yeah. He called me ‘beauty.’ He said, ‘You’re really good-looking.’ Yeah. It’s odd.”
