A heated exchange between Senator Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and conservative talk show host Tucker Carlson during an interview released Wednesday has cast a spotlight on the growing chasm within the MAGA coalition regarding America’s involvement in the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
The contentious two-hour discussion saw the two prominent conservative voices lock horns on U.S. military action, knowledge of Iran, and the influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups.
The interview, which quickly went viral, highlighted a significant divergence between the “America First” isolationist wing, championed by Carlson, and the traditionally pro-Israel stance often associated with figures like Senator Cruz.

While the Trump administration has officially denied direct U.S. involvement in Israel’s offensive operations, the prospect of America joining Israel’s attacks has clearly driven a wedge within the Republican base.
One of the most intense moments occurred when Senator Cruz asserted, “we are carrying out military strikes today.”
Pressed by Carlson on whether it was the U.S. or Israel leading the strikes, Cruz clarified that the U.S. was “supporting” Israel. Carlson, emphasizing the gravity of the senator’s words, retorted, “This is high stakes… If you’re saying the United States government is at war with Iran right now, people are listening.”
The conversation further soured when Carlson grilled Cruz on his knowledge of Iran. When asked about the country’s population, Cruz admitted he didn’t know the answer.

Carlson appeared incredulous, stating, “You don’t know the population of the country you seek to topple? How could you not know that?”
Cruz, visibly frustrated, shot back, “I don’t sit around memorizing population tables.”
Carlson pressed on, inquiring about Iran’s ethnic breakdown. Cruz responded, “They are Persians and predominantly Shia.”
Carlson then interjected, “What percent?” leading to both men yelling over one another. “You don’t know anything about Iran,” Carlson accused, adding, “You’re a senator who is calling for the overthrow of the government and you don’t know anything about the country!”
For context, Iran’s population in 2025 is estimated to be approximately 92.4 million people. The country’s ethnic composition is diverse, with Persians constituting the largest group at roughly 61% of the population. Other significant ethnic groups include Azerbaijanis (approximately 16%), Kurds (around 10%), Lurs (6%), Baloch (2%), and Arabs (2%), among others. The predominant religion is Shia Islam.

The debate also veered into the role of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a prominent pro-Israel lobbying group. Carlson questioned whether AIPAC’s goals were shaped by the Israeli government, suggesting it constituted “foreign influence over our politics.”
Cruz denied this, stating that Israel does not direct AIPAC, but conceded they “care about them.”
When Cruz then quipped about Carlson’s “obsession with Israel,” Carlson sarcastically retorted, “Oh, I’m an anti-Semite now? You’re trying to derail my questions by calling me an anti-Semite.”
Cruz denied the accusation, but later challenged Carlson to provide another reason for his “obsession” if he wasn’t an anti-Semite. Carlson countered by stating his role as a lawmaker was not “defending the interests of a foreign government,” and that such a position did not make him an anti-Semite. AIPAC’s stated mission is to advocate for policies that foster a strong and enduring U.S.-Israel relationship, emphasizing shared values and strategic interests.

Further tension arose when Carlson questioned the veracity of alleged Iranian plots to assassinate President Donald Trump, citing a lack of apprehended hitmen. Cruz maintained the threats were credible, based on intelligence community reports, despite acknowledging no arrests. Carlson repeatedly questioned why, if these threats were real, Cruz wasn’t advocating for direct military action against Iran. Cruz dismissed the effectiveness of such Iranian plots.
The interview concluded with Carlson and Cruz continuing to spar over President Trump’s approach to Iran. Carlson highlighted his concern about entering “more foreign wars that don’t help us when our country is dying,” while Cruz accused Carlson of “reckless rhetoric” and attacking the former president.
The exchange vividly illustrated the complex and often contradictory viewpoints that characterize the current foreign policy debate within the conservative movement. Senator Cruz later took to social media to mock Carlson’s population question, sharing a meme of Carlson asking Luke Skywalker about the Death Star’s population.
