Twice-Told Lie: Florida Woman Gets 50 Years for Stabbing Boyfriend To Death

A Florida woman was sentenced to 50 years in state prison on Thursday after entering a no-contest plea to Second-Degree Murder with a Weapon. The conviction stems from the fatal stabbing of her boyfriend in May 2022.

The sentencing followed Tykidra Lanijah Leonard’s September plea related to the incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of May 20, 2022, at a home on South 14th Street.

Palatka Police Department officers responded to a report of a stabbing and found Leonard kneeling over the victim in the front room. The victim, who was her boyfriend, was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. During the investigation, Leonard provided detectives with two different accounts of the events, both of which were ultimately contradicted by physical evidence and surveillance footage.

In her initial interview, Leonard claimed she believed her boyfriend was an intruder and stabbed him with a kitchen knife as he entered the door. However, surveillance video quickly refuted this story, showing both Leonard and the victim walking in and out of the home together about 30 minutes before officers arrived at the scene.

When confronted with this evidence, Leonard changed her story during a second interview. She claimed the couple was arguing, and she stabbed her boyfriend after he grabbed her by the neck in an act of self-defense.

This revised account was also inconsistent with the evidence collected by investigators. The medical examiner found that the victim had been stabbed twice—once in the upper chest and once in the back—and also had scratches on his back and a bite mark on his forearm.

Detectives noted that Leonard showed no significant injuries during her initial interview, further undermining her claim of self-defense.

“Domestic violence always has the potential to turn deadly… The defendant’s statement at sentencing illustrated that she refused to accept responsibility for killing her boyfriend,” said State Attorney R.J. Larizza. “She will have 50 years to reflect on the damage she inflicted on our victim and his family.” The 50-year sentence brings the legal proceedings to a close for the fatal domestic incident.
